A lot of people talk about knowing your value these days. If you truly know your value and can communicate that to your organization then you can negotiate a higher salary or support.

However, have you ever noticed that a salary increase (if and when it happens), academic promotion, or some practical support, never really gives you long-term joy and fulfillment? Soon enough whatever extra we might get is not enough.

This is where knowing your values comes in. Values are the real driver of more fulfillment and less stress in an academic career. Knowing your values is a North Star that defines everything else.
